Client: The International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement (ILRI) is an independent Dutch nonprofit that collects and disseminates knowledge for better, and sustainable, use of land and water resources, especially in developing countries.
Challenges: Interview scientists for a print magazine commemorating ILRI’s highly technical water improvement projects. Humanize technical topics for a lay audience (donors, advocates, general public); create a memorable entry at an international conference on water issues. Manage the project, from initial ideas and themes to interviews, writing, and editing.
Results: The magazine was well received at a water and land symposium in Kyoto, Japan.
“Under an extremely tight deadline, and with only a basic knowledge of the institute’s field of work (irrigation and drainage for rural development in developing countries), Leslie produced ten profiles that were gems of clarity and simplicity. Reactions to the magazine from ILRI’s board of directors and its professional contacts all over the world have been enthusiastic. Leslie added immeasurably to the public relations effort.”
